Traxxas Spartan RPM sensor issues

I have to Traxxas Spartan with the TQi radio system. I have installed the voltage and temperature sensors sucsessfully, but the RPM sensor is not feeding me any info. Am I missing a piece? The RPM sensor came with a hex screw to hold it in place, a zip tie, and a set screw I couldn't find a place for. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated

Talked to traxxas support, apparently they haven't finished updating their website, and that's why it doesn't list the RPM sensor. I do need a spur gear with a magnet in it. It is on the way now. I will update this thread with my results. Thanks akkip, for pointing me in the right direction

So, I got the magnet and holder today and after a bunch of head scratching, wrenching, and cursing, I got the sucker installed. It would be nice if Traxxas had some kind of mounting instructions for this thing, it would have saved me a lot of stress. Oh well, saves me money on shampoo i guess :-/
So, the verdict is: RPM sensor working correctly by mounting the magnet holder right on the flex cable coupling. But not surprisingly, the conversion of that to speed doesn't work. Apparently my boat travels at 4500 Kph :O. guess I'll need to get the telemetry expander and gps module to get an accurate speed reading.

Did you install the magnet?
On the car/trucks there is a magnet that get installed on the spur.. Dont know about the boat

There was no magnet included with the sensor. I thought it might need one, but since this is my first "real" RC, I didn't think much about it. Also, the traxxas web site says nothing about and RPM sensor for the spartan, but my boat has the mount for it right by the motor

On the traxxas telemetry do you set the rollout for the mph. I have the spektrum dc3s an the get the mph/kph i have to set my rollout which is the amount of turns my spur gear turns to my truck moving 12 inches an then my mph/kph can be used if i dont set the rollout it isnt accurate or just shows the rpm the gear is turning idk if u have to do that with the traxxas system or if they already have that programed in on there system. Might check that out buddy. It would probably be hard to measure the rollout on a boat

The TQi system lets you type in the number of teeth in your pinion and spur gears, as well as the drive ratio (all set at 1 out of the box) probably because there are no drive gears, just the shaft hooked to the prop. I'll try messing with those numbers to see what it does to my speedo

Oh ok i just know i had to mess with my settings on my radio for it to be correct with my vehicle but my radio didnt come with my car. Im guessing you have the apple dock on ur traxxas controller an u have to go to that specific rc that ur running right?

Yes, I bought the dock attachment as it wasn't included with the stock boat. I did dive into the settings a bit and tried changing the number of teeth in both spur and pinion and I changed the drive ratio, all of which had no affect on my speed. Still running at 8000+ MPH lol. I'm thinking it's something in the program that just won't let it work. Probably to force a person to buy the telemetry expander and GPS module. Oh well, something to put on the ever expanding list of parts I want.
