    nimh battery over heat problem

what would cause my nimh battery to over heat so much that it melts the plastic on the outside and turns black. will to much exposure to snow cause them to over heat.

Usually when nimh get warm or in this case hot,it's because it is trying to supply voltage to whatever is demanding it and can't keep up causing resistance, that equals heat enough heat builds and it vents a cell.snow and water = extra wheel spin higher amp draw.running nimh all the way dead is not good for them

Not sure higher wheel spin would cause it (lift your rig up in the air and it will run forever), more like Higher traction resistance or Binding might have caused it..
Usually to get a NIMH to vent it has to be getting drained higher then it can supply.
This usually happens when the motor is straining to pull the rig along, your squeezing the throttle to make it run faster and the motor then pulls in more current to comply with the demands you have asked it to do..
This can cause it to draw alot of current from the battery.

IF the inside of the pack got really wet then it may have shorted the entire pack out.. Rare but it COULD have happened...

Can you get a PIC of the pack so we can see what the damage is ?

I agree with RLAxial.. I would not use that pack anymore.... Just lucky it wasn't a lipo or you may have lost your rig...

1st question were you just using the one batt with the kershaw if so there is problem #1 those motors eat juice like crazy and also I had a 3300mah traxxas battery that had the same type of heat shrink on it and as soon as it got good and soaked after a run i had to cut the heat shrink off and dry it out and then i wrapped i 2 layers of electrical tape and no more problems ...if the heat shrink doesn't cover the whole batt completely and water gets under it it will cause a dead short across the cells poof instant heat

i was using 2 of those nimh 5000mah 7.4. will 2 5000mah 7.4 40c lipos work better with that dual motor system than nimh batteries. will i have an over heating problem with the 2 lipos

The lipo will improve that issue dramatically. The kershaws are the same motor as the 775(maribuci or something like that) with a few degrees of timing added for more rpm. They are amp hungry on there own x2 Just compounds the problem

The nimh just can't supply the amps needed fast enough that causes heat and vented the cell. That pack is done, that cell is toast you could fix it but its better to go lipo
much better performance and will run cooler.
Dont forget a low voltage alarm.

Better yet.. Get a Low voltage cut off.. This will stop the lipo's from going POP.

i know there are 2 kinds. lvc and lva. how is the lvc one used. the one that i was looking at has 2 spots to connect things to. one is where you connect the lipo to but i dont know what the other one is used for. does the lvc one require a batter to power it.

There have been many reports of the cut off causing issues with the evx2 esc,at least the novac smart stop
I use a alarm .plug it in to the balance tab on the bec side batt and go.the cut ofF plugs in where the esc plugged in on the Rx and the esc plugs into it. The alarm and lvc perform basically the same function monitoring voltage .the cut off cuts power to the motor. The alarm just makes noise a lot of noise 90 db
