hey sparkers,

well I have been pondering the idea for a while, I really like the performance the wraith axles give but im a scale guy at heart. I did some searching and really like the looks of full widths on the scx10. There is going to be tranny and link issues but nothing that can't be worked out.

I had a wraith sitting collecting dust, so today I begun the tear down. Well I already have the scx10 up and running lol, its funny how when you start, you just want to get that little bit more further. There is still some fine tuning to be done.

Here's some pics, what do ya think?

*Hello fellow RCSparks members. I have been...

Hello fellow RCSparks members. I have been toying with the idea to make a definitive upgrade list for the Wraith and eventually other models. Mostly so that new members or new Wraith owners can get some guidance to commonly asked questions. Also, so us members can point New members with these types of questions to a single location. There are tons of threads on Wraith builds and upgrade advice given, but no complete list.

If you find this thread is helpful, please post if you would like it to be a Sticky in the Newbe help section. :want:

To be clear, this is a "Definitive" list of upgrades for your Axial Wraith based on an extensive amount of research I've done along with my own experiences. I belong to a couple other forums so I'm flexing on the experience I've learned from those along with what I've learned here and in my own workshop.

In No way is this a list of the ONLY way to do a Wraith. There are hundreds of other options out there. I focused this list on the most typically well reviewed and good performing parts that are available to us consumers. I am not referencing any custom work (except for some easy tire mods) as the goal here was to provide guidance to those looking to spend $$ on their first upgrade and don't know where to start. This can be applied to the Wraith kit, the standard Wraith RTR, and the new Poison Spyder RTR. To answer some questions up front; Yes the Tekin RX8 is a great esc for high power motors, it's just really expensive. The hobbywing stuff is good too, but the MMP is about the same price. There are just way too many tires out there, so this is what I've seen and used and found to be the best. Let me hear it though if you have a strong case for something not shown or in a spot you don't agree with.

Please take a look and let me know what you think, your feedback is essential. :haveaniceday:

==================================================  =======================================
The key to this list, is that it is flexible. If you have an alternative idea or disagree with something:

Please post in the thread string your idea or feedback

If you like an idea, post with an x2 (or 3, or 4, etc)

If you just have a question as to why I put something in there, feel free to ask and I will let you know

I will work to incorporate ideas and suggestions into the list

I will upload new images to the first post (and remove the originals). The first post will be the "safe source".

==================================================  =============================

first off this thread will cover what i am using...

first off this thread will cover what i am using at the moment, its a good look at some of the more advanced areas of video antenna tracking systems out there .

its not for everyone but it sure does a way better job than a stand alone patch antenna at keeping the strongest possible video signal, but keep in mind the more Elaborate the setup, the more things can go wrong !!!!! . I speak from experience, so here are a few pictures of my setup:

this is a 8db "Patch antenna" mounted on 2 Robotic arms Purchased from www.ServoCity.com

Short Range Recievers

almost all short range receivers will be in the...

almost all short range receivers will be in the 2.4ghz frequencies, this limits them to usually a maximum distance of 2-3km on a good clear day ;)
the most popular systems are the SPEKTRUM 2.4 systems. this will do great for anyone that does not want to venture too far away , basically line of sight flying. with fpv this type of receiver will do best with smaller crafts that don't go too far due to the battery and size limitations, a perfect example would be the "DJI Phantom" quad
but i use 433mhz for everything i fly even my hexacopters :) due to having Spektrum brown out issues in the past and crashing because if it.... Grrrrrrrrrr.
spektrum rx's dont like to be around strong radio sources , (like video transmitters)

i will post some pictures soon..

the more popular of all the tx/rx units out there...

the more popular of all the tx/rx units out there are "open lrs" "EZ- uhf" "Dragonlink" and "TSLRS" just to name a few.
I have a great deal of experience with the TSLRS NR600 normal range 433mhz receiver and the "RX600LR Long range version" from "danish aviation systems" here: Welcome to Thomas Scherrer UHF Long Range System

off the start these receiver systems are not compatible with every radio system out there and will have their own proprietary radio transmitter (that you must add to your existing radio system and some possible saudering and voiding of your radios warranty) there are cheaper ways to get around this i will get into that later with a new sub-forum ;)

thomas scherrer NR600rx 433mhz reciever:

this nr600 i have modded a bit and installed a SMA connector to the pcb, instead of the antenna wire, so i can change antenna cable lengths.
i also sauder my cables to the rx's pin headers , i don't like loose wiring, but thats just me ..

the white wire is the "RSSI" out . it is a variable voltage output , 0Volts is receiving a strong signal, and 5V means no received signal at all. this is used to give a graphical representation in most OSD's of your radios communication strength.

this is my receiver used in "PPM" mode installed in my ZephyrII wing , its actually under a sheet of clear 3mm iron on laminate to keep things dry ( the 9th pin of this 8ch rx is ppm out and rssi out) all 8 control channels are sent thru 1 cable to the flight controller , less wiring

the Ease of setup is its greatest feature, along with a $120 price-tag. i have yet to have any issues with this receiver ,

LR600-
tslrs 433 transmitter-
this is a work in progress and i will populate this thread from time to time ;)

RVOSD by range video

there are many types of electronics that any one...

there are many types of electronics that any one individual may want to purchase and install in his or her aircraft , and this OSD (On Screen Display) falls under Video equipment , for that bit of added security, since some of these crafts can and will run a cost from a few hundred into the thousands of dollars. and knowing that if something were to happen like my radio dies the rvosd will be able to fly its self back home and give you a second chance at a full recovery !
I will give a quick run thru of each component that i personally have experience with, starting with the RVOSD from range video. its a bit pricey but well worth it.

the main reason i bought this rvosd was that it was an all in one unit and has upgradable firmware, and secondly it is capable of a PPM signal in, meaning you can connect a ppm receiver directly with 1 cable instead of many, but wait it gets better ,,, you can plug in "2" ppm receivers to the rvosd for "diversity"receivers and always have the best reception possible. this works well with a long range flight !!

now there aren't too many Laws that pertain to governing a hobbyist and his FPV rig, so with this said , Please Use all this information wisely and fly with respect, as you probably don't want to be the one that new laws were made for ;)

Whats up guys i am a 14 year old rc enthusiast...

Whats up guys i am a 14 year old rc enthusiast and i recenlty purchased a duratrax element 3900kv brushless system and have been having problems with it (i think) so i was driving it today and when i would take a sharp turn and punch the throttle it would kind of make a grinding sound also it is giving me alot of tourqe which is odd. when i went to set my slipper clutch i would roll back the truck and punch the throttle to know if i need to tighten or losen the slipper, well when i did that and hit the throttle it mad a painful grinding sound and didnt come back to me like it should. also when im driving it when i hot the throttle it does a couple of jerks and pulls wheelies and grind noises. so when i went inside to check out what was going on i found a few things so when i had it up on the stand i hit the throttle and the motor would shake so i took off the motor and i saw 2 screws missing from it and i shook the motor and heard something inside rattling. i also looked at the gearbox and saw one of the screws the go through the gearbox and attach to the motor mount/plate. so PLEASE help me out on this problem i would really appriciate it!

I have some news...I've decided to start a build ...Wait for it...1/8th Scale buggy!!! I've already bought a Brushless Motor for it 2 sundays ago...That marked the beginning of a new RC. So, Here's my plan for this buggy, I want to be able to Bash and Race it. And Also, I've been wanting to get a 8th Scale buggy since I started racing. :haveaniceday:

Alright, I shall start with this one picture.

This Motor I bought...One word...TEKIN! To be exact: A LIGHTLY USED, $75, TEKIN T8!!! It is going to paired up with a Tekin RX8 ESC. :omg: Oh man, oh man...This is gunna be MEPIC!

I'm wanting to get a Losi 8ight-e or a Team associated RC8.2e...Oh, or a Duratrax DXR8-e. Ok, WHEN THE HECK IS PAYDAY!!!??? :bouaaaaah: :omg:

Sorry about the dirty hands. To much RC action that day. :secret laugh:

I will keep you guys updated on this build.

Hey Guys,
I've been into RC for about 8yrs now, and I love this hobby. Your imagination is the only limit to what a person can build or create.
I have enjoyed tinkering with my Slash 2WD, it's now a Monster Truck.
Here are a few things that makes it special:
A) Custom Rear Shock Tower Mounts(drops the rear shocks equal to front shocks)
B) 2.2" Wheels( width-reduction) *makes the 2.2" Flat Irons look great
C) Extra foam in rear tires(for more realistic tire reaction and throwing dirt, rocks, etc.)
D)Rear Shock Shafts on Front Shocks with Rear "Rustler" Springs

I will be posting pics soon.

I thought if anyone wanted to hear what I have...

I thought if anyone wanted to hear what I have been up to this week I would share it. So I was at school and saw a flyer for a STEM Race Camp, I kept reading and it sounded fun so I joined it. It's one week long started Monday and ends Friday. Throughout the week we are having little competitions to see who is the best driver of the group and to tune the car the best. After you found out the best driver you have to assign a logo, pit crew, and other jobs. I was the best driver in the group. Anyways on Monday we did drag races to see the fastest team and then they go on to face another team, it's set up with brackets. And you guested it our team won the drag races. Today on Tuesday we did drifting and our team won everyone except one which was false start. Wednesday is circuit racing and Thursday is final prep and testing and Friday is the final race. It has 4 events drifting, circuit, oval, and drag races. The whole camp is sorta based on winning and teamwork. If you win everything but have bad teamwork your not necessarily going to win. So it's a mix of winning and good teamwork. I will keep everyone updated on how our team is doing. Oh yay the car we are using is a RedCat Lightning STK On Road Car. Almost forgot to mention why I am in it! There's one big reason or well two, first I love racing RC cars and the whole hobby thing also the prices are amazing. First place gets a new RC vehicle up to $800 value, Second $300, Third RC helicopters, Fourth gift cards, Fifth random spare parts, Sixth I don't know yet. I really want to win because if our team wins everyone on the team wins the prize to everyone would win a truck of their choice or money. Well guys hope it doesn't rain and win all the events!

Things to Know Before You buy a New Battery for your RTR ~!

A few people are asking about " What battery...

A few people are asking about " What battery should I get for "
I won't go into Charging LIPO as for most beginners they are not recommended as your first choice of battery.. They are something to step up to with experience.

Before we look at Better batteries we need to make sure you have a charger that is capable of doing its job..
If its just a wall charger then I am sorry to inform you but it will not do !

Why??

Most Wall Chargers that come with RTR packs are rated very very weak.
Most are between 250mah and 500mah if your REALLY lucky.

This is just as an Example... Look at the OUTPUT.. its 200ma... Ignore the voltage at this point in time..

To get a decent run time.. We need batteries rated at least 3000mah or longer

The way we work out Charge times is to look at the OUTPUT ma (Milli-amps) of our wall charger and divide this into the MAH of our chosen Battery..

So Using our 2 examples We take the 3000mah of our Example battery.. and DIVIDE it by the 200ma of our Example charger.
3000/200 = 15

So It will take 15 HOURS to charge this Battery.
THIS IS A LONG TIME !!!

So How Do I make the charge Times Shorter ?
We need to replace the charger.

Most aftermarket chargers are capable of Charging up to 5amp...(Some can go higher but they cost ALOT of money)

Most NIMH and NICD batteries are safe to charge at 1C ratting.. Which equals 1amp to every 1000mah of the batteries rating.. ( 1amp= 1000ma)

So a Typical Smart charger like an IMAX B6 or a Thunder AC6 can safely charge a 3000mah battery at 3amps.

So we take the 3000mah rating of Our example battery and now look at our NEW rated charger
Remembering that 3amps = 3000ma
So
3000/3000 = 1
So the 3000mah battery can now be charged in just 1 hour ! Thats a 14 hour time reduction.

NIMH and NICD batteries get hot with use.. So before you charge them up they need to be allowed to aircool back down to skin tempreture before you charge them..

So this is just to explain to New RC'rs that before we can recommend a battery.. we need to know what you have in order to charge any battery that we recommend..

Voltages
Using a 9.6V Charger on a 7.2V battery will result in a Pack Venting. (Over cooking it which is VERY bad.)
Your chosen charger should be matched to the battery you intend on using..

Smart Chargers are recommended by most members as they are able to charge the batteries you have now and the Batteries you may upgrade to later on..
Smart Chargers in general will charge nearly all sorts of batteries regardless of connectors..

Connectors

How to Identify Your Connector

Currently I am debating on whether it is better...

Currently I am debating on whether it is better to wait for back ordered parts or just bite the bullet and buy a new RC. I want to keep my old one running seeings I did a lot of work converting it from nitro to electric, but it is so old that finding parts or trying to fab parts is getting kind of tiresome. So here is my question, if I was to purchase a new RC, what should I look at, I am a fan of 2wd but open to 4wd, I am more of a off road basher. There are some RC's that have caught my attention but I didn't want to jump and buy the first thing I liked. I am doing my research and trying to figure out which one is the best fit. Personally I love my old school stadium truck, before they moved the tires under the body. Ok so I guess it is to the list of must haves...

Must be off road
if it is RTR must be LiPo ready
Also must be Electric
and that's about it.

Thanks for and advice you give. Cheers - Jon

Hey guys I've been trying to decide what my next purchase should be and I keep going back an forth an would like to see what you all have to say.

I want a basher that I can beat the snot out of an not break much and if it does break it needs good parts support so I'm not down for weeks.
I've pretty much narrowed it down to either the slash or stampede. Must be 4x4.

And I'm thinking slash. But which slash. I see the new ultimate slash has the mcg chassis that is supposed to be really good for racing.. I probably won't do much racing so would the older higher center of gravity chassis be better for fast paced trailing and bashing?
Also I've seen some slashes that have been somewhat converted to a monster truck... I like that possibility and the versatility. So for that should I get the Oct slash or the standard slash?

I know its a lot of questions but thank for your help..
I'm also open to other models let me know what ya think.

My name is Kim and I live in Norway with my Wife...

My name is Kim and I live in Norway with my Wife and two children.
I'm now 37years old and been doing RC almost all my life. I got my first rc car from my dad when I was around 5years old.
Don't recall the brand, but it was a silver BMW I remember. The firs hobby grade RC I got was a 1/10 scale TAMIYA rally car. I think I was around 8years old then. It had working headlights and all. I used a really old Futaba radio, but when I think about it...It probbebly was the latest model back then.
Have allot of fun with this car and I think this is the time the RC fire was lit in me and stayed lit to this day. I have not owned allot of RC's like you would think after all these years. I have always taken very good care of my toys and stuff since I was a child, so my cars have always stayed with me for a looong time. The second RC I got was the TAMIYA Hornet(first release) this came as a kit and I had to build it myself. I think I was around 12years old.
I had this car for a long while until I got a trading deal I could not pass up. I traded my TAMIYA Hornet for a TAMIYA Super Sabre. This was a huge upgrade from my rear wheeled drive Hornet to a 4x4 buggy. After 24 years this car is still in working order :)
After the Super Sabre I was lucky to get a good deal on a unknown/don't remember 1/8 scale nitro car. This was actually my last car for many years of not being active in the hobby for about 10-12 years. Until about 5years ago I started flying RC helicopters and really got the heli bug and still got it. It wasn't until last year I really was craving for some RC car action again. So I went and bought a Traxxas Stampede 4x4 VXL and had a blast.
Today I actually order my self a summer gift, a AXIAL SCX10 Trail Honcho 4WD EP RTR. I have followed RC sparks on YouTube for about 2 years now and loving how you share the passion for this hobby.

OK... this is getting long. I tend to easily get carried away when it's some thing to do with the RC hobby that I love so mush.
Hope to have allot of good fun here.

I would love to be able to test run the Wraith...

I would love to be able to test run the Wraith and the Ridgecrest.. but I can't.
So for owners of one or the other, or better yet BOTH, can you give me some performance feedback? The price ranges are the same, more or less for an RTR package, and I am leaning towards the Ridgecrest mainly because it looks like it has longer legs and more articulation and the AX10 seems a nice bit of groundwork to start customizing..

I live in Homer in AK so there is no option other than dropping the cash and ordering online really and before I drop the bills I am hoping to hear back so I can make a slightly more informed decision.. the videos of both running are encouraging but have not helped narrow the choice much. I know either way I am not likely to be disappointed.

aight thanks in advance.

So it has been about two months since I decided to convert my Losi Mini Rock Crawler into a 1/10th scale truck.

First thing was figuring out a lexan body that would fit the variable wheelbase TCS L-Trail chassis. I settled on the Parma Jeep J-10 Honcho at 10" wheelbase. I also decided I was going to do everything in my power to have it up and running for the Bantam Heritage Jeep Festival last weekend in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Hey all. I'm planning my next build. I'm not going to give it away yet but it's big. Some of you know already. But anyway. I'm looking into a large scale dually rim and tire. Preferably beadlocks. And I actually want them to look scale and not like two wheels bolted together. Not saying anything is wrong with that just not what I have in mind for this build.

So does anyone know of a scale 2.2 or 40 series dually wheels? I will be capable for either lol. Well when I'm done at least. Or any suggestions on makeing some really scale ones? I've seen one set of 2.2 rims dually style that were right but can't find them anywhere. Help plz

LOSI Micro C build (Micro Camaro)

hey everyone, i started this project last...

hey everyone, i started this project last Saturday, and as of now it it functional, but still needs some work. As the base I chose to use a losi micro DT, and for a body a revell snap-tite camaro concept.

The first thing i did was measure the wheelbase of the body and the truck to find out how much extension i would need.

I took the axles off of the stock chassis.

Then I cut out and mounted a new custom chassis out of one of those little cases that ipods come in, kinda like a CD case, only much stiffer plastic.

Dremel time!

(almost) final product!

Tell me what you think, this is my first custom build that I have ever done, so any feedback is greatly appreciated!
Also, if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Thanks, Simon

Well after reading a ton of posts on here and...

Well after reading a ton of posts on here and other forums I have decided on a new motor for my scx10. I ordered a HH TorqueMaster Expert 35T from RC4WD. I am planning on using a 15t pinion with the stock 87t spur. That would give me a 5.8:1 gear rato. Holmes Hobbies site suggests around a 5.5:1 ratio so I should have no overheating issues with that set up.

Thank you guys for your help.

Okay, this is my first ever RC build and build...

Okay, this is my first ever RC build and build thread... ever. The truck is actually already done but I wanted to wait to start a thread and post pictures because I didn't know how long it was gonna take me to finish the build. It did end up taking me a long time to finish the truck because of work, family, etc. I also freaked out a little when I came to installing the electronics. Everything on the truck is stock right now, but I will be adding pics of any/all mods that I do. But for now it's done, so here we go!

First is the three speed tranny. I headed the warnings on being very careful on the assembly and making sure the parts are installed correctly so I didn't have to go back and reassemble.
Now, fast forward 6/7 months later. I don't know why I didn't take any pictures of the chassis assembly. I guess I just figured that since it's all stock there's nothing really interesting going on and there's plenty of other threads that have those pictures up.

At this point already had a test run of the truck and broke the servo saver off of it which I ended up replacing with a Traxxas servo horn.

Here's a LITTLE flex shot!

I'm planning on getting a Wraith Kit as my next RC.
It will be my first Kit, which I've been looking forward to doing for quite some time.
The Kit already has some nice upgrades out of the box, but I was wondering what other upgrades you guys would recommend as a start.

I'm considering using the following electronics.
Castle Creations Short Course ESC + 3800kv Motor Combo or Traxxas VXL-3S ESC + Velineon 3500kv Motor
Savox SC 1258TG Servo
Spectrum SR300WP Receiver
all of which I already have in my spares box.

From what I've gathered so far the steering needs upgrading out of the box, so I plan on adding some Aluminium C-Hubs and Knuckles to my purchase from the start.

sat went out with the trucks to do some trail ridding and crawling and get some video. took my scx and my daughters/ my venom creeper. during a hill climb with the venom it flipped over backwards and tumbled down the hill. I ended up popping a shock cap off, but then wouldn't move. got it home and started to tear into it yesterday to find the problem. now when I first built this crawler it was for my daughter( son has the same one). they were both xmas presents from santa and santa was on a budget. knowing they wouldn't use them like I do I went cheep on the esc putting in a duratrax sprint esc. well that was the problem with it. I don't know if it took a hit on the tumble but its is fried. the esc case bulged and melted in side. oh well its part of the hobby. time to buy a new better esc.

Replacement Transmission?

Hi all. Hope I'm in the right forum.
I have a Tamiya Highlift Hi-Lux, (which up until the transmission decided that it didn't want to play anymore), I was using all the time. That was over a year and a half ago, and its just been sitting under my bed getting covered with dust, when it should be getting covered in mud and dirt, and all the other good stuff.

My question is, what would be a good replacement transmission?. Nothing too flashy or expensive. I don't want another 3speed trans, maybe a two speed, maybe. I only really want to do some rock crawling/climbing/trail driving with it. I've got all my other "toys" that are built for speed. I want to enjoy my "Lux". It's running 2.2s at the moment, but I want a more scale looking truck. I have some 1.9 tires, and I'll be getting some RC4WD 6 Lug Wagon 1.9 Steel Stamped Beadlock Wheels (White) for it to give it that true scale Toyota Hi-Lux look.

Any help, advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks for your time,
