I took on this project for a friend that wants a...

I took on this project for a friend that wants a dependable 4s boat for racing. He builds some mean nitro engines so hopefully we can barter for a new mill for my 1/8th scale Squire Shop.

I beefed up the motor mount area with some CF to give it a little more support and I knocked the bushings out of the strut to run a 3/16th flex shaft and get rid of that nasty square drive. The motor is a Leopard 4074 200kv with a Turnigy 180 esc V.2 that's wired up to run two 4s packs in parallel. (He wants to use the packs he already has from his planes) All the soldering is done on the esc with parallel EC5's and bullets for the motor. The water cooled part of the stock motor mount fits the Leopard but I had to get a new ring clamp to fit the 40mm can.

The rudder/strut mount was bolted to the hull with nuts on the inside (pretty stupid) so I drilled them out for new 6-32 stainless hardware and made a transom plate with 6-32 blindnuts. I still have to make a new rudder control rod out of 4-40 rod, the old one is pretty thin and flimsy, it will get a new rubber boot with a metal seat glued in. I'm waiting for a dual water pick-up rudder blade and offset bracket coming from Oz so the esc and motor will get separate water lines.

Ok guys! I've decided to start a thread for the build of my custom RC boat! I've made many boats before this one, but this is by far my most ambitious, and LARGEST I've ever attempted!

START: June 5th 2011.

I wanted to make a fiberglass boat... completely fiberglass... not wood covered with it. Even though I had never glassed before in my life, I did my research online and thought I'd give it a go. I wanted a boat around 32-36in long and powered by a 2300-3200kv brushless system. The motor/esc of my choice was going to cost around $100 which is perfectly reasonable, but I wondered if I could spend that $100 on anything better....

I speculated about using a gas engine of some sorts, but I knew I'd have to make the boat much larger than 32in long, to go with a gasser... I had no idea until I started modeling HOW big this would turn out.
Although the boat may not be as fast as if I used brushless, I liked the idea of a gasser!

I chose to model my boat in 3D... using Google Sketchup, I drew this boat, and scaled it to what I thought would be a good size for a gas engine - 42in long.

I was basing the design on two boats in particular... the Aquacraft Rio 51, and the Apache style boats. (You can see both designs in the picture above...) After looking closer at the size of these engines, I concluded that the rounded canopy would provide the most height to fit the engine. So that's what I stuck with.

WELL! This was a rather rash decision on my part, but I've never looked back... I was searching online when I finally decided to power my boat with an engine from a yard trimmer. I wanted something unique and tough, and a 23cc from an actual "Weed Eater" brand trimmer was NOT going to cut it for me (no pun intended LOL).

Introducing the ultimate reason behind this project: :in love:

This my friends, is a 40cc, 4-stroke, 8000RPM, 2hp, 4lb/ft, of torque MONSTER. Yes, you read that correctly, this is a 4-stroke... not 2 as normal. Again, I wanted something unique, and after searching online, I was only able to find TWO other RC boats that used a 4-stroke GAS engine. (As in not nitro... there are some of those)

It's a Briggs and Stratton 21100 series yard trimmer engine that comes on some Sears brand trimmers. I was very lucky and found this one practically brand new (as far as I'm concerned, it WAS brand new) from a Princess Auto near me. $50. Yup. That's half of what I would have paid for the brushless system!

Ok, now, because this is such a massive engine, I had to make the hull even BIGGER! It now rings in at a neat 54in long.

Modeled the engine and stuffed it into my hull model to see how fitment would work... fit like a glove.

Time to start making this thing!
