Hi guys,

I'm looking at getting an Axial Wraith and was wondering if it is worthwhile upgrading it with a brushless motor combo? I was looking at a 1200kv motor from Tekin. NEW Tekin ROC412 BL Crawler Motor 4Y 1200KV TT2603 | eBay
Or would I be better off running a Tekin 45 or 55T brushed motor instead?

Finally Picked up a Wraith.

Hello All,

As the title says, I finally found...

Hello All,

As the title says, I finally found a used wraith in my area, and I was able to mess with it yesterday.

What I bought & did
"Kit" version with a Traxxas VL-5 ESC it came with a Wimpy motor and a 42T crawler motor. it had the Wimpy installed, but the engine power wire was off so I took it apart re-soldered it, added Deans bars from the ESC to the engine, greased everything tightened up the all the components, and fixed the binding suspension. ( it has intygy piggy back shocks the over flow was binging with the roll cage)

Tossed a 5000MAH 2s lipo in it and went over to the park. My initial thought was dang, this thing is a lot faster than I expected. After a little more time with it I realized its literally the hardest thing to drive on the planet. Then I tried to crawl a few parking blocks and I heated up the Motor so hot that it melted the Positive wire off again.

Likes:
*it looks really cool
*I like the offset pumpkins on the solid axles
*has potential
*way more durable than I expected
*battery compartment, and strap. Very secure and very nice design.

Cons:
*do not care for the “pogo” stick like suspension
*the wheels actually turn under the truck the harder you turn, this could be my drivability problem
*poor center of gravity, the axles are way too small and light for the weight of the upper body
*tires are actually small in comparison to the kit
*absolutely needs longer shocks
* because of the “pogo” stick suspension there is literally no droop.
* terrible crawler, could be from engine, could be from poor suspension design. (still tbd)

So, I am going to toss the 42T in there with a little smaller pinion to help out with the crawling. Guys I need help on the pogo stick suspension and the tires turning under the truck when you turn. The “C-Hub” looks like it has a slot that can adjust the caster, is for caster adjustments, and will this solve this problem?

Currently I am more un-happy with this kit than happy and its sad because this is a highly rated kit.

Any thoughts? Advice? Ideas?

Thanks,

Well it's another night of not being able to sleep and I have decided to put some spare parts to use and build a frankinstein build crawler. I have a spare losi comp crawler chassis and a set of axial xr10 axles that are just sitting around and decided to adapt them to the losi chassis. I'm not too sure how it will turn out as I'm still figuring out the linkage set up I'm going to use. If anyone has done this before ,please feel free to give some input. This build is just for fun and if it does not work out no biggie. Cheers

I was at my LHS yesterday and the onwer Mike...

I was at my LHS yesterday and the onwer Mike which is a buddy of mine had a XR10 sitting on the table. Great looking rig.
I don't know much about them, but it looked to be complete. It didn't have the motors or any electronics though, but that's not a big thing.
I started talking to him about it, and turns out it was one of his personal rigs (has 2 XR10's) that he was getting ready to sell.
He gives me a great deal on all my parts, and when I showed some intrest in the rig, he made me this deal.
One XR10 'roller', and another XR10, complete but needs to be reassembled.....both for $200.00
My question is....
....since I know zilch about the MOA crawlers, is that a decent deal? I don't believe he'd try to get the better of me, knowing that I'd surely be right back up there again for more parts.
I just do NOT know a dang thing about it/them.
Both have bodies too...the complete roller is candy orange with the stock 2.2's with the stock beadlocks and anodized orange rings. They also (both rigs) have internal weights.
Please, please, PLEASE give me some insight!
Should I go get 'em or not?

Hi guys,

I'm not asking for preferences, just what are the major differences between the 2 cars? Speed, versatility, capabilities and limitations?
The reason I'm asking is that I took the minister of finance with me today while looking at some RC's and she really likes the Wraith... But she also likes the honcho as well and me being me said she couldn't have both. (I know I'll lose in the end... lol)

So any opinions on both cars good and bad would be greatly appreciated...

Hi everyone!

Just bought a new Wraith a couples of week ago.

After reading alot of tips on the forum, I've did turn the rear upper damper posts, turned the front lower damper post upside down. Are still waiting for the E-maxx big bire dampers..

I also fitted the battery in front of the dash, and replaced the servo horn.

After a few runs, it sounds like something should be lubricated og oiled. Where are the places that I have to add oil or lubricate?

Pics will come..

I was searching my parts box and came across some...

I was searching my parts box and came across some aluminum servo horms and thought I would try modding the suspension on the wraith with them . I increased my articulation about an inch more by doing this simple mod. I am not the original person with this idea , but I improved what I seen done and added some bling to the design. All the mods I seen were differant designs simular to this one I came up with. This set up will only help when CRAWLING and NOT DESIGNED FOR SPEED. I would not use this mod if your in to speed as it affects the body roll at higer speed ( using a swaybar setup will help for high speed driving). I have found using this mod that it has dramaticly improved the crawling performance and still maintains alot of shock adjustment positions and ride height adjustments without affecting the added articulation. I am only using this mod in the rear for now as I am still working on the front linkage design ( waiting on special shaped servo arms to arrive ). My mod can always be modded and improved more by adding more aritculation, shock adjustment postions and ride heigth adjustment if you use the same design I use but with longer servo arms ( I'm using 1 inch servo arms in the rear. ). I have tried my setup mod on a stock wraith and found that when installing the servo arm to the shock mount locations that you will need to make a mod to the setup and add a stop for the servo arms in the rear only. Also doing this on a stock wraith you will not be able to adjust ride heigth . This entire mod for parts cost about 20usd to do or free for those that make their own parts.
My parts list:
1. ckrc droop kit ( tested on this ckrc design that I have)
2. 2x 1inch aluminum steering arms
3. 3x 3mm diameter.1/2"-3/4"long shock bolts and nuts (one bolt and nut for a bump stop if you do not use optional stop setup (number 6)
4. 2x plastic spacers (plastic washers used between the servo arm and droop kit to allow rotation)
5. 2x 2 small 3mm metal washers (both are used on the topside of the servo arm normally where the locking screw would go)
6. OPTIONAL part for servo stop.. 4 aluminum gas car linkage locknuts and a piece of throttle linkage wire.

Remember that this works best for CRAWLING ONLY !!! Try it out or inprove it..lol.. Have fun

Setup installed and in the normal postion.

The 2 red aluminum throttle linkage locknuts are used for the top stop for the servo arm and are mounted in the top forward most hole on the droop kit.
[IMG][/IMG]

Fully extended postion. note the lower front droop kit bolt stops the servo arm from over extending (builting stop) Also note that the droop kit has alot of other mount hole options for tuning left.

Hey guys, I am thinking about expanding my addiction/interest into the rock crawling world, I love trail running, and have a plethora of rocks around...

Not looking for comp quality (yet) just want to get a rig that can start me in that direction if I find I am any good....lol

So my questions are::wut:
What are the thoughts of the group on a G-made R-1?
What low cost ($150 or less) brushed motor/ESC recommendations do you have?
What size battery do you recommend (I run 5000MaH Gens Ace LiPo in the Honcho)

I have a free budget of $100 a month so this will be a figure out what I want, planning ahead saving up for it getting stuff a little at a time to put it all together....:enjoyingmahplaylist

Like I said I am a total NOOB at this and am looking for any and all input from the experts who don't work at the LHS trying to push their inventory..

Thanks for any input!

Everything has been going good, until last night....

Everything has been going good, until last night. I was out running around and the rig quit all of a sudden. Figured it got too hot, so let it sit a few minutes, then tried it again and it worked. There was however, some noises coming from the front diff. This morning I tried it and everything seemed fine. I went to my cousins birthday party and got it out to run around. I noticed it didn't run like normal and started looking at it. It was only powering the rear wheels. If I picked it up and hit the throttle all 4 wheels would spin, but if there was the slightest pressure on the front they wouldn't spin. Somehow I lost 4 wheel drive. Any ideas? I am going to pull the diff cover off and see if there is any damage in there (stripped teeth on gears???). Thanks

So after a couple of years of wanting one...

So after a couple of years of wanting one patience won out and a killer deal fell in my lap. Well it's a wraith RTR and me being me I had to have something different from every body elses. So I made a trip to the local home depot and $6.46 later I walked out with this
as you can see it's just a sheet of galvinized flashing. A little patience and some tin snip wrangling later and one side is starting to take shape
Now for the fun part , broke out some good old fashioned pliers and after a little primer one side is finished and fitted

You would think the roof would have been easier but all I have to say to that is shyaaa right, I bent up a roof scoop for it (you never know it might help with roll overs which if my previous driving session is an indicator I'll need it) It is secured with some good old solder and then blended with automotive glazing putty

up next is the other side and the hood I'll work on the hood tonight and should have the start of it posted by tommorow

Question about shocks

I think the shocks on my Ridgecrest are leaking...

I think the shocks on my Ridgecrest are leaking (possibly already empty) because it doesn't have much articulation and suspension is real stiff.... I planning on just rebuilding the factory ones, but thought I would see about upgrading them instead. I have been seeing the HR internal spring air shocks online (link to them below), but never seen or heard of anyone using them. Just wondering if they are good. I am just looking for something that would be goo for bashing and light crawling. I have also thought about just buying a set of originals, swapping them out with mine, then rebuilding mine a little better than factory. Any suggestions or opinions? If there are any others out there around that price, that would be better, I would be willing to consider them. thanks

I was waiting around the house all day for the UPS guy to show up and deliver my Ridgecrest. Around 5:30 pm I decided to run to the store, and when I got back, there was a package on my porch lol. I quickly took it inside, but as I was getting a knife to open it, my mom pulled up to, picking me up to go bowling. So I sat the box in my room and went and bowled...Just got home and ripped open the box. Here she is in all her glory lol...She is used, but very lightly, and came with battery and charger, so first thing in the morning I will be out running. I tested it out in my room a bit, but noticed the screw to one of the knuckles was loose...will be tightening it up, along with the others. Then i will run around the house and yard a little until my aluminum pieces come in.

I also removed all the stickers and will be reapplying my own at a later date.

Hello!
Trying to find a decent crawler to get into a little competitive crawling, not hardcore.. just for fun. I'm finding it hard to choose a kit. It looks like the XR10 is discontinued, I dont trust Losi to keep up the part support for the Comp Crawler (if it isnt already discontinued, as its hard to find..). Is the Losi a good buy? Or the Nightcrawler?
Is the Bully from rc4wd.com any good? Will it have a steady part support?
Any other crawlers out there which will have decent part support? Would the Gmade be any good? it looks kinda cool :)
I have the Vaterra Twin Hammers and an SCX10 so I'm looking for a pure rock crawler.
Budget is around £400/$700 ish for the kit with electronics

I am looking at buying a used Ridgecrest and was wondering how hard it would be to transform it into a Wraith? If I have done my homework right, all I would need is the cage, interior and bottom skid plate right? or is there something else I will need? I like the Wraith, but every used one I find isn't much cheaper than a new one and cant quite afford a new one along with battery/charger. I can pick up a Ridgecrest pretty cheap at the moment and thought about over time, getting the pieces needed to to the transformation. Any and all info/suggestions are welcome. thanks guys

So I decided to rip apart the front of my Twin Hammers to see what is going on in there while I was busy cleaning it after a weekend of bashing. While I had everything apart I was looking into locking methods of the front differential. Well, I haven't found a lot of information out there, but the one intriguing thing I found was the fact that people put all kinds of crazy stuff inside of a differential to try and get them to lock up. Some people have been using Silly Putty! I was somewhat thrown by that. Never in a million years would I have thought to use Silly Putty as a locking agent inside my front dif. Here are a couple of pictures of the silly putty in place.

I'll report back on my feelings of using Silly Putty. Seems like a pretty good way to gum up the works.

Gonna use a new Traxxas 2.4 G radio and receiver I picked up on the bay a while back for now.

10 minutes after I got home I jumped on the Vanquish website and picked up 2 Titanium tie rods and 2 drag links. 1 is for the Ridgecrest.

So after she found out I had already spent over $500 she wouldn't let me buy the tekin motor and ESC or the Hitec Servo I wanted to throw in there. :disapointed:

So I went on Ebay and picked up and Axial 20T motor, AE2 ESC, and an Axial AS-3 servo. Got everything for under $100 and I already have a castle link so we'll see how that goes. The main thing I wanted out of that bunch was the Hitec servo though. I hate the stock servo on the Ridgecrest. Maybe she won't beat on it too hard and it'll last a good while. I guess only time will tell.

She asked if we could build it together so she could learn how everything works. She's real excited about it. Hopefully it'll be a fun weekend.
I'll be sure and post pics here and there.

fexy flex

hello out there. i just wanted to take a sec and...

hello out there. i just wanted to take a sec and offer some advise to the new guys out there and talk a little about flex, or suspension travel in there comp crawlers ( this could also apply to a scaler setup to some degree.)
ive seen alot of this on build threads and dont get me wrong, build what you like but im gonna throw down some reasons why i think too much flex is bad.

on a side note i usually set up my comp crawlers to be able to flex to almost the top of a pop can, and thats all i need.

moving right along..

some reasons that too much flex is bad.

1. during an offcamber situation your suspension will unload ( sometimes without notice), causing you to flop on your side.
2. if you do roll over and start hammering it back and forth to get your rig to flip back over, most likely your just gonna jiggle your axles around and get nowhere.
3. makes your rig less stable ( see #1)
4. will cause your tire to drop into a tight spot or hole instead of coasting over it.
5. usually lots of flex comes from big shocks ( usually 120mm) which brings your rig up in the air, giving your rig a higher center of gravity, also making it harder to make the steep climbs.

a good rule when done building a crawler is to put it on its side, on the rims and see if i can drive it if its hard to drive but doable then i kow ive done good. if i put it on its side and it flops over, back on the bench it goes. i find that less suspension travel and the right throttle control will put your rig where u want it everytime. or at least close......

Cheers
