    Project TopCad

Gonna build my first Land Rover D90 hard body...with mostly TopCad products from asiatees.com

starting with the frame rails. Stock SCX10 frame rails I got from Terry (aka 4mods)...then painted them Silver.

    Vanquish Method Racing Wheels, 1.9...

...with 1.9 Mud Slinger tires (modified since photo taken)

I have more parts, but i'm waiting for a few more days before I start the build and share more photos.

all the TopCad parts are on and its a roller. along with building the transmission, the next fun step is to figure out a body mounting system.

the body mount I did for mine I put a pice of 1/2" angle on the frame in the rear with 2 holes drilled in it and used the extra screw on body post brackets that come with a scx10 and and screwed them on through the tail light holes then pin it on from underneath .

And for the front I cut the top off the front posts and drilled them and used screws.

That's how I did mine and it works great

Got a few more part today for the Project TopCad including the TopCad 80118s aluminum winch.

I must say this is one good looking winch. finally a great alternative to the RC4WD and 3Racing winches we all know too well. don't get me wrong, RC4WD and 3Racing both make great winches, its just nice to have another option to make your scaler different from others on the trail. Without powering it up, the only downside I can see is its only controlled via a 3-way toggle switch and i don't see a RX plug for a 3rd channel receiver/radio.

as i said, i have not tested the power of this winch....but if you going for power...then you need a HeyOK servo winch...enough said!

TopCad 22117 Heavy Duty Gear Set for the SCX10 Transmission

all steel...including the spir, you can tell by the weight!

TopCad 80215 Side Rocker Step for the D90 hard body.

These little guys looks awesome and feel great. all aluminum and a perfect fit. it might be awhile before i get to mount them as i am waiting for the D90 bumpers to get back in stock before mounting the body

The gears will allow me to build the transmission and move forward with this build...slowly but surely

Finished building the transmission with the TopCad steel gears

closed up and motor plate mounted.

TopCad steel spir gear installed. topped it of with a red 4mm TopCad aluminum nut (56399r).

    TopCad steel drive shafts mounted.

I used HPI part #86094 for the driveshafts. M4x2.5x12mm cut down to 8mm because the TopCad drive shafts only allow for a set screw, not a pin, while the TopCad transmission output shaft is drilled for a pin along with the output shaft on the TopCad axles.

Great News for anyone considering purchasing this winch.

even though it does not come with a controller to allow connection to a 3rd channel, you can use another winch controller from a different brand.

To test this I unplugged the winch from another SCX10 (Blackened) i have and simply plugged this winch in...and it worked via the radio's 3rd channel (DX3C).

the winch is no louder than other available winches and the cable feels like its plastic coated. plus the winch line it thicker then the cable on the RC4WD winch and the thicker cable does not pigtail as much as the RC4WD cable.

Man this rig looks ace!! I was just wondering, how long is the winch? I would put one on mine but I think it will be too long with the wire on the end.

The rig looks sweet though, keep up the good work.

the lenght of the winch from where the wire goes in to the other end of the winch is 2" + 0.375" (3/8) for the flange that stick out (as seen in photo) = 2.375" (2 3/8). from the back of the winch to the front of the winch rollers is 1.25" (1 1/4). the winch is 0.75" (3/4) high.

with the wire bent at 90 degrees, you can add 0.1875" (3/16) to the overall length for a total of 2.1875" (2 3/16) (or 2.5625" (2 9/16))

Thanks man! So, when you say the length of the winch, is that including the bit of plate that sticks out on the left? Sorry, I'm being really picky but I love this winch and space on my custom bumper is tight. I have 2 1/2" in total.

    Thanks for the info bud.

2 3/8 is the lenght of the winch (including "...the bit of plate that sticks out...").

will the wiring harness cause you any problems?

Ahh thanks man. I dont think the harness should cause any problems, like you said I can bend the wire back 90 degrees. From my calculations it should just fit

    Body update;
Cut the body this morning to fit the Axial fender flares

    fender flairs mounted...

the body is stretched over the Axial frame. the frame is just a few mm longer then the body allowing the body to sit tight on top. the frame may have to be trimmed once i get the TopCad bumpers.

the wheelbase is not that far off anymore!

    Bumpers arrived today from asiatees.com

TopCad 80204 for the front and TopCad 80216 for the rear. as these are designed for the D90 chassis, i will have to come up with a way to mount the to the SCX10 chassis.

sounds like a challenge to me!

the axles are RTR TopCad's from asiatees. i have not tested them under load, so i cannot speak for their operating abilities. this one will be a roller for at least one more month.

Almost forgot about the TopCad D90 Side Steps (80215).

My first design was not so nice, so I put a little more thought into it and 3 hours later came up with this...

...now for the body mounting...i think!:-/

I did the body mounting today. i knew what i wanted (reverse body post), and i think i made it work.

front mount using 1/8" x 1" aluminum flat bar and the existing screw locations on the front of the body:

for the rear i had to screw the body mount support thru the body. if i can find a spare wheel, the screw heads will be covered, otherwise it still should look OK after paint:

now to paint the mounts and move onto the next step...

Decided to work on the light for the body last night. i did the rear tail/brake lights with Axial 5mm standard light buckets. I did not work on the front light as i am still not sure if i will be getting a different grill and headlight assembly for it.

i also fitted the interior last night. this is what's left of the stock RC4WD full interior

I might end up tinting the rear windows...not sure yet...

Getting close to paint. i sanded the body and fixed a few minor scratches with Evercoat Ever-Glaze Spot Putty.

I used a bit of flat stock styrene to fill in the area where the fuel cap use to be.

...and finished it off with the putty. The Axial fender flairs will cover most of it anyway

I put on the Primer today, inside and out.

the putty i used cracked a little, but that's alright. i'll use something else to fix the crack and apply more primer.

They work fine. they have a larger diameter than the stock shocks, which for me, was a negative. brings a little more life to your chassis compared to the stock plastic shocks.

interior (Haze Gray) and exterior base color (Light Gun Metal) done

I also mounted the Superwinch from TopCad along with a TopCad tow shackle.

also picked up a few more parts from a couple of online stores (TGN and Vanquish). A Fairlead for the rear bumper, A Method 1.9 wheel for a spare and a Arches diamond plate set for the body
