    Bills Vaterra Twin Hammers "Gecko"

Thought I'd give this a build thread even though its rtr. Just unboxed my twin hammers produced by Horizon Hobbies.
Awesome rig, absolute belter for the money £280 rtr with spektrum radio gear and lipo.

First impressions are I think this may become rig number 1 for use.

And for a sense of scale

Spares are already available mate, though it seems strong enough. This is obviously number 1 a rock racer, but I'm more into the scaling scene so will adapt to suite my needs.

Out the box, the servo is sllloooowwwwww. Switching on for the first time and setting off its fast, then change gear and faster lol. To crawl this requires very little throttle or its off like banshee. Drag brake........well there isn't any. Its got safety built into the forward reverse to stop you stripping out the gear box and that delay is a good few blips of the throttle before it goes again.

So for me this needs, a savox servo, a crawler motor and esc.

Those points arn't really negatives but are not what I require form it. Its totally flat underside and massive articulation means its gonna creep and slide over most things I recon.

All in for £280 with spektrum radio gear, lipo, and 2 speed its bonkers value for money.

Quite simply don't wait buy it nowwwwwwwwwwwww

Well sweet!!!! I will start saving!!!!
PS when you take it apart are the tranny gears /diff gears metal or plastic? I could not find this info in my searches...... and how do you think an Timbuk 2 Novak system would do in there (18.5t?)

So you think we could get some body off pics?

Man those front A arms look beefy. Solid plastic, not the "trus" design that all the other makers do. I like this. Would you mind making a bit of a review,? And also I'm am curiouse about the tranny gears also. Lol. Are the diffs locked? Or open. And on a scale of 1-10 (1-crap/10-amazing) what would you rate the quality of the rig?

    Hi UKBILL
Are replacement parts readily available? I assume you are across the pond no?

I was alsowondering about the gearboxes and steel gears and such.

Looks similar to Losi cars in the way it is finished. Great looking truck- can't wait for more info.
    Thanks for sharing.

Right guys got quite review for you, even though only had it 3 hours lol.

Firstly out of 10 it gets an 8 from me, would like it to be 10 but you'll read below why not.

1, Gears are plastic from what I've seen but havnt been inside the tranni yet.

2, The diffs, rear is locked, front open. No grease in rear diff at all and plastic gears.

3, having already fired mine up I've already burnt out the gear shift servo, the end points ARE NOT SET, pretty rubbish that really.

4, the esc has a crawler mode I've since found out but it's not in the manual you gave to go on there site to find it. In stock form its fast, then faster. It is almost impossible to crawl as its all or nothing but guess crawler mode solves that. It cocks a wheel up on acceleration too.

5, the stock steering servo is awful, über slow! I ave fitted a savox in its place, obviously much better now.

6, I ploughed straight ahead and fitted a Novak rooster with cr tuned 35t motor and its now a dream, 1st gear crawls ace, drag works great and it no longer cocks a wheel up under torque.

7, obviously not water proof now but tbh I rarely get my cars submerged its not my bag.

    So to recap

    1, Strip and grease
2, set end points for both servo's
3, program the esc for crawler mode or swap out
4, consider a slower motor than the 15t stock can

New servo, esc and motor fitted

    All back together again

Hope this helps. We've got a scaler meet tomorrow and 3 of us have these arrive today so expect some videos of the triple hammers.

We had a scaler meet today as planned and 3 of us had bought these. As I've said I put in a novak rooster esc and a 35t motor, the other two today although doing something similar ran stock and rock crawling boy you could see the difference.

The front diff definitely needs locking unless your planning racing this as that was pretty much its only let down today, 1 front wheel spinning up rather than the other being forced to grip. I might put a little weight in the wheels too as its a slow coach. Tyres, articulation, drag and cog are superb.

A quick video from today. Mines car 2 in the first half then car 1 in the second you'll see the difference I talk of by the way it walks the obstacles.

Right taking advice on locking the front diff I jammed it full of blu-tak. Horrible job but done.

Access to the diff (with cage off) is 4 screws so took seconds to have it out. A nice note is what looks like a plastic front hinge pin brace is actually metal with a plastic cover.

Crawler mode!?!? I did not know of this. Got mine a few days ago and first day micro servo stopped responding... So sounds like the weak link ta this awesome rig. I was thinkin a crawler motor too. Jumpy lil thing. I already grabbed a front locker. Lookin ta crawl more than race. But I love the thing and like yourself I felt black and burnt orange accents:) stock looks a little cheesy and stickers poorly stuck.

But if ya could get back ta me how ta do the crawler mode that'd be geat!

Thanks for posting this thread. I saw one on a site a few days ago and it got me wondering about it. It looks great, and I'm hoping to see it/one in action soon.

There is a crawler mode, apparently you can find how to program if you look at the manual on line. A friend he tried it and yes you have a bit more crawl on the trigger but the drag break is rubbish and thats no good.

Thanks for the detailed shots! Subscribed! Looks like an Exo with solid back axle...hmmmmmmm, been working on one of them. Sounds like it might be worth it to wait for a roller sale and get some goodies put inside of it!

No worries mate. Had to try my RC4WD King shocks. 110mm in the rear work perfectly and mirror the ride height perfectly. I'm going for 80mm's in the front, a tad too long but that'll compress and they only travel about 8 or 9mm so should work.

A few choice decals and an RC4WD winch guide fitted.

Only recently built an exo now I'm wanting one of these too. Looks fantastic in the matt black. Sounds like they need a almost ready to run version minus the electronics....

Never been a fan of these types of rigs because they always seem like a compromise between two rigs. A buggy and a rock cralwer and that means they only do everything half as well as they should. But it does look cool and everything you have done so far is very nice! Excited to see how this turns out and holds up for ya.
