My FIRST Water Landing .. in the WIND?! Ha ha :-)

Part of the reason I do this hobby, is to see what limits I can push. I have the good fortune of being able to try out all different types of gear that I get in the studio – and that gives me the ability to Modify, upgrade, downgrade and try all sort of neat things. Well, this super cub is one of the products that I love. Been using the Cubby for years – and this one in the video is 5th generation for me. BUT! One of the things I have never done – was to go and land on a lake….

Now, I have driven trough this province a few times – and always wanted to stop and try throwing my plane out over the water.. and being an “eager beaver” – I wasn’t going to let this opportunity pass me by. So, I pulled over my truck – slapped in a battery, and took to the skies. I never considered that the additional wind, weight and NEW MOTOR would make the plane SO AMAZINGLY QUICK! Trying to get it to slow on approach was almost imposible without and air brake. Those pontoons make the plane soarrrrr through the air with additional speed.. and it was AWESOME to try and get it down onto the water without slapping it. Sighhhh.. I think I have to wait until the summer before I can try again on a calmer pond.. but I LOVED EVERY SECOND of the FUN!

GREAT Times with the SUPER Cub – First Water Landing!

Man…you ask 4 advice in the video…but not much can be given…from what I see your experience says it all…you transmitted that you were a little bit nervous with the first experience…(thats what she said) yes, you know that those floating devices are heavier than the usual landing gear…On the other side…u have the TORQUE 2 compensate…that last twist facing the wind WITHOUT AILERONS…critical…(yeah,u where lucky with the landing!!!!) just behaved like in minute 8:06, in which u turn to the left and loose maybe a couple of meters in just a second…You know that you have to land facing the wind.  However I also bet u couldn’t face it because of some tree issues…However I can see on the picture that on the right side of the screen, there was no concrete and seems that there was more space…but the sun was there also, right? arggg…..next time if ur planning on landing with the wind on your tail…try to take it farther in distance 2 your point of piloting…if u are short, the little waves will do the rest…(and if u can…do it sideways…gently take a curve at low altitude using your torque until u r facing the wind…) I don’t know…I think u did great…the micro on the camera was recording a lot of wind blowing and it seemed that it took of easily facing it… I have flown and had the same experience that you did…BUT WITH AILERONS NEVER WITHOUT!!!longer runaways must be taken in order to take smooth landings…and…its allright if u dont care 4 the plane, but if u do…never fly without a rescue boat… Sorry no pictures to post…
On the other hand, heard on the news over here about those fires going on…sorry about that. My best wishes on that issue from this part of the world. Wishing and hopping to get them extinct soon.

next time you try,  bring the plane in to the side, so you don’t hit the wall again, go alone the bank

I saw the video and have some advice.  Land from left to right, maybe 20/30 feet from the shore.  Crab in to the wind to maintain a straight and parallel track to shore, and just before touchdown, straighten the flight path.  When landing with the wind like you did, you are increasing your ground speed greatly.  Other than that you flew the airplane great.
