Hello my friends. I have start the build of this new project a few days now (almost a month) that I will like to share with you and my goal is to be ready to hit the water in about 15 days.
This custom made Oil Rig Platform in 1/50 scale will be radio controlled only in some operations like: the big crane, the anchors, and the dropping of the life boat.

It will not be self movable but it will be towed by rc tug boats like the real oil rig platforms. And we have lots of them in our community.

    So let’s start.

Here is the dimensions of the platform:
    Length(overall): 90cm
    Deck length: 70cm
    Width: 45cm
    Deck height: 50cm
    Overall height: 120cm
    Wight(about): 25-30Kg.

As you will see I use for this project very cheap materials. So for the deck I use two pieces of melamine. I convert the crane that I was used in my private pond so I can use it on this platform.

I use the three legs of the crane for base of the helipad. Smart he?!

The helipad is from plywood 5mm.

I forgot to mention that this platform must be transferred in two boxes. So everything on it must be assembled and disassembled for transportation. That is why the deck is in two pieces.

For the base of this platform I use two rectangles pieces of pvc pipes and six round pvc pipes. Inside the six round pipes I will put plastic polyurethane cylinders for buoyancy.

The base of the platform will be connected with two pvc pipes. Inside the pipes I will put about 1.4Kg of lead for extra weight and balance.

It looks like a nice start ..but what is the wood on the main deck? if it is not advantech it will not survive a wet life ....( you say it is melamine but ive no clue what that is ?? I assume you know if it is water resistant or not. )

And here is some photos of the stuff the will be on the deck of the platform.
On the center the box represents the main building of the platform and the base of the drilling tower.
The white cylinder is the base of the secont smaller (not rc opereted) crane.
On the right corner will be the fire station building with a water canon(rc opereted) on top.
And you see some containers and pipes for the drill.

On the side you see the lifeboat for emergency evacuation.

That’s it for now. Stay tuned for more.

You can learn more about menamine or Particle board here:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Particle_board

I use this wood for the deck because it is very heavy and cheap.
I don't mind about the water because water will never be up there. The water line of the platform will be 25cm under it. It will be painted after all for water splashes.

k just did not want to see your hard work fall apart ... I know what particle board is saw dust and apparently paste for the glue as it puffs up and falls apart with any water contact ... The paint will help protect it ... Advantech is flooring that looks like 7/8" OSB but carries a 50 year warranty. water can damage it but it takes lots of wet time to mess it up .
    .
remember to paint in the gap where the two peices come together ...and happy rcing

Do not worry my friend. This platform will not be one piece. All parts will be removable and stored in two big boxes also for safer transportation. That is why the deck is in two pieces. So if something happens to the deck it can be easily replaced.
I’m thinking in the future to replace those two pieces of the deck with a thick marine plywood. Because I want to build a second deck underneath. Will see about that in the future.
Thank you for your advice. On the edges I will aply first polyester bodyfiller.

Some new update photos of the building.
I have start making the drilling tower. Needs more work.
