This is a streetstock I am currently building. It's a basic pan bent box, with a few swage lines to add a bit of character, I just wanted to knock something out pretty quick this time. It's made of 0.8 & 0.6 mild sheetsteel.

It kinda looks like a lincoln from the front, but it is'nt based on any car in particular.

It is for oval track racing. It will be my 2012 season racer since a rule change has rendered my '57 Chev no longer legal for the class. It will have TT-01 running gear in it.

I'll do the chassis next weekend and the barwork & front grill the week after.

That is some nice work you did there. I can not wait to see more on this build and what it looks like in the end!

    Thanks Dribble!

Building them is quite a bit of fun. Not as much fun as smashing them on the track, but I do enjoy doing the sheetmetal work.

    Hiya cdnltded,

Yep, the '57 is made from metal also. Here is a picture of it with the paint so fresh you could still smell it.

The race class is a contact class, lots of fender rubbing. That is why we make the bodies from metal.
After about year & a half of competitive racing...

If you would like to see the build of the 57, please see this page.

As to the rule change it was about the bar work above & below the bash bars on the front being external of the body. I like the Chev how it is and don't want to cut the front up, so am making another car. The Chev was getting pretty beat up anyway.

    Thank you true_scaler,

Yeah, time is probably the biggest factor in building them. I don't have many tools, I am lucky enough to have a mate with a workshop in his backyard.
I did buy the hand bead roller to build these (was about $280). Everything else (except welder) is just hand tools, snips, grinder, drill, plyers and folded over pipes, bench etc. We just got a budget brake press ($150), which I wanted to play with, so I'm building the new car using that. Toys / Tools - same thing.

These cars are just over 3kg (including Tamiya TT-01), steel body & chassis on it's own is around 2kg. There is a maximum weigh allowance of 3.2kg for this class.
The average race is 3 to 5 minutes, because they are a feeder class all running gear is tamiya stock, so the 540 cans can get hot, but we just fan cool them between races.

Was at the workshop yesterday and was able to knock out the chassis. Not attached to the body yet, nor is the TT-01 bolted on the chassis as yet.
Usually I just drill holes to vent the TT-01 battery & motor, this time I tried something a bit different with the scrap perforated steel I plan to make the front grill with, looks alright I reckon. I wanted to test the theory before trying it on a heavy lift rig I might add to my 4x6 recover truck build that I'll start next.

    Hey Thanks Greenie!

These things are what got me into my current hobbies, RC and sheet metal crafts. Once I found out there was guys making metal cars and smashing them as a race class locally I just had to give it a go. The last 4 years or so has been a real learning experience, both in RC & metalwork.

I got the chassis hinged to the body at the back now (lots of faring up & eyeometry), but there ain't much to see, I'll take another picture once I get the front mounted & grill put in, but unfortuatly due to the pre xmas rush I may have less time to work on it untill we break at end of the year now.

Had some time to put in the front and mount it to the chassis.

Don't look like much, but most the barwork is behind the grill. Next is adding supporting internal barwork and bash bars on the front & back, which I'll proberlly do over the xmas break.

Had a chance to spend a few days on it over the break. Internal bar work and bash bars pretty much done. I am in the process of painting it now.
